4SeamIQ is a baseball app in development that estimates pitch speed from video and connects readings with review. The challenge goes beyond displaying a number: the estimate depends on travel distance, release and arrival timing, and the quality of the capture.

Through McLachlan Design LLC, I designed and developed the capture, analysis, and review experience, including the math behind pitch-speed estimates. The implementation combines elapsed video time with an estimated release-to-plate distance, adjusting mound distance for pitcher stride. The interface connects that calculation with video review and understandable results.

Account for the release point

The ball’s flight begins ahead of the mound. I implemented a stride adjustment to estimate the release-to-plate distance used in the calculation.

Connect timing with distance

Release and plate-arrival timestamps determine elapsed time. The calculator divides estimated travel distance by that time and converts feet per second to miles per hour.

Make the estimate reviewable

Capture, analysis, manual review, and results belong to one flow. Video review gives the user context for the timing decisions behind a reading.

Product design and development covering video capture, pitch review, and a calculation for average flight speed. The app remains in development. Readings are estimates influenced by timing, capture quality, and the assumed release point; radar-equivalent accuracy has not been established.
